Wow
Stuart Hall has been charged with rape.

He was always irritating on It's A Knockout, but clearly(allegedly) he took advantage of more than a joker.

If he's found guilty it will she that he's one of those who, like Jimmy Savile, assumed his celebrity status allowed him to do anything he felt like, and who must have felt he was safe now he's in his 80s. (Clumsy wording, I know, but one is still innocent until found guilty in this country, hard as that is to believe on occasion.)

Sorry, non-Brits; this won't mean a lot to you. But it's one more entertainment figure of my childhood with a reputation trashed. Who's next - Lenny the Lion?

It is simply appalling, isn't it? I am sorry that this man appears to be something far worse than he ever seemed. If he is guilty, I am even sorrier for his victims.

He always seemed a little slimy to me, but if he's guilty of what he's been charged with it's horrible. Even worse as it contributes to a picture of a Light Entertainment scene in which predatory men took advantage of children and young women as if it were a right. I know people kind of assumed that was the case with pop and rock stars and their groupies, but this, like Savile, is in the area of family entertainment, so it genuinely is shocking.

Who's next - Lenny the Lion?

My money's on Jim Davidson.

I think he's a given.

There were so many slightly creepy characters around in light entertainment in those days. I shudder to think who we might hear of next.

Hasn't he already been nicked.

Not yet charged, I think.

In some ways I'm more surprised about this than I was about Jimmy Savile who I always found deeply creepy.

Who's next - Lenny the Lion?

The trouble is it makes you suspect everybody from that era!

I know what you mean. Please the lord, not the Crackerjack or Blue Peter people - that I couldn't cope with!

It's sickening and it makes it hard for all the people working with kids. I'm not sure anybody can be trusted, people in the street, at school, at the park, everybody becomes a suspect.

I like your icon. I really like Bernie. Many days, I wish I were him, spending my days reading and shouting at people ;)

Almost everybody can be trusted in reality; we are just conditioned to fear, these days.

Reading and shouting at people is a good lifestyle choice, I agree.

Good point. I hear he frequently enjoyed having someone's hand up his backside.

I was thinking 'Bernie the Bolt' sounds suspicious in retrospect....

(I know it was really 'Bernie, the bolt, please' but everyone thought of him as Bernie the Bolt - perhaps there was a reason...)

He handled a shaft a great deal, I suppose.

All those avuncular types, all those cheery DJs. One feels suspicious of all of them in retrospect.

Peter Purves is a very suspicious sounding name too.

And for that, a resounding eeuw. You'll be accusing Petra of bestiality next.

That had occurred to me. Plus what did they do with all those squeezy bottles?

It's a Knockout! is before my time so I can't really think which one he is... but, yeah. It's scary.

Aargh.

He was the one who giggled a lot, rather than the brusque northern one, who was Eddie Wareing.

I see your Tough Guide icon!
