Stay away - we're not worth the bother
Apparently, our revered and not-at-all-racist government has been considering some sort of negative advertising campaign to dissuade Romanians and Bulgarians from coming here in the sort of numbers Poles did when they joined the EU.

The Guardian held a competition for posters.
Some are so good it makes me feel like leaving. As if the grey skies didn't do that anyway at this time of year.

You should see the anti-immigrant types we have here in the USA.

I have met some. Including one whose parents were both immigrants!

I love folks who climb the ladder and then kick it down so no one else can climb up after them.

Well, with the exception of a few hundred thousand indigenous people, yours is a nation of immigrants.

We, too, are a bunch of mongrels if you take the long view. These jerks think a long view is more than a month.

Exactly. All these anti-immigrant cretins have selective amnesia when it comes to just how they came to be Americans.

Hell, even I am half-immigrant (from Wales, which doesn't really count as far as the English are concerned, but sure as hell does to the Welsh!) And when a Jewish bloke of Eastern European descent in Arizona rants about immigrants ... well, it's just so stupid it's funny, really.

I've come across some, sadly.

I do rather like both of those! The first one has most impact though... :)

I wish I could read to the bottom of the second one - some of the items are funny.

And on BBC Radio 2 yesterday www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01q8ptf
I didn't listen because just hearing the guy introduce the programme made me want to scream. I don't think Vine himself is racist but the BBC keeps trying to rile people up and helps the racist broadcast their opinions, like they need any PR campaign... Same with same-sex marriage and female bishops and so on. I wouldn't mind if there was enough time to really discuss things but the format means you get a couple of idiots shouting louder than the rest of them and there is rarely time for anybody (presenter or callers) to put forward a full counterargument. You'd think history would teach people a thing or two but nope!

Hmm. I do think there's a racist substrate to our government. I wish there wasn't, but they are too eager to curry favour with extremists.

The Today Programme was talking about the original Leicestershire posters telling the Ugandan Asians not to come. The irony was that many of them did go there, on the strength of those posters.

It just goes to show that there is no such thing as bad publicity, and that a large red button marked, clearly, 'Do Not Press' will be worn out by the curious!

Absolutely. And we can expect Bulgarians and Romanians to come here to do just that.

I don't know where to start with the laughing or the crying... But I'm British, so I'll laugh for the moment, in lieu of not drinking tea. ;-)

We hate ourselves - we'll probably hate you too  /o\

The fact that someone even thought about an actual anti-campaign is just... Where to begin?
gillo From: gillo Date: February 1st, 2013 11:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
Tea is soothing...

An anti-campaign is a stupid idea on so many different levels it could only have come from our present government.

"Don't come to Britain. It's full of...the British..."

I did have to LOL at that. But oh dear...

We are very good at running ourselves down. "We're a bit shit really" is a national motto of sorts. Except at Olympics time, but that's only every half-century or so...

Yes, but you also have Mark Knopfler.

What's he done for us lately?
desdemonaspace From: desdemonaspace Date: February 2nd, 2013 12:15 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh, just written a boatload of lovely songs. I only recently discovered him a month after he was in Minneapolis!

((cries))

I'll have to come to UK to hear him. Wanna come with?
gillo From: gillo Date: February 2nd, 2013 11:42 pm (UTC) (Link)
You come to this country, I'll come with wherever you like!
desdemonaspace From: desdemonaspace Date: February 3rd, 2013 03:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, wonderful! If I could work out WriterCon UK, I would.
